"What I cannot create, I do not understand."

I am the CEO of the California-based startup Scenera, which focuses on privacy and security for edge video AI.

My main interests are rapid software development and artificial intelligence systems. Computing can an incredible tool for helping us understand complexity.

I earned my bachelor's in Cognitive Science (+ Math minor) at the University of Virginia — while a researcher at the Laboratory for Systems Neurodynamics with William Levy (a pioneer of the brain learning mechanisms known as LTP and STDP). I then completed my Neuroscience PhD at the University of Pittsburgh, earning a certificate of completion from the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition (affiliated with Carnegie Mellon University). I carried out 3 years of postdoctoral research at the Johns Hopkins University. Throughout my entire academic career, I had a focus on machine learning — understanding how artificial neural networks and human brains learn and focus their attention.

I moved to industry to join a robotics + machine learning startup called Brain Corporation in 2012, and since then have been involved in a number of startups and companies — all revolving around machine learning and complex dynamical data.

I am always learning. At work, people know that I like: reliable systems engineering, version control, automated testing, interface (API) specs, domain-specific languages, power efficiency, minimalist design and UX, private and mobile computing, containerization, augmented reality (>virtual reality), human languages, and brain-inspired computing. And people outside of work know I like musical instruments, breakfast, and the sea.

I'm a named inventor on 35 patents, and an author on 36 peer reviewed scientific papers (sole author on two).
